this piece of japanese calligraphy (書道, shodō) was drawn by an artist in the gion, the geisha district of kyoto. the frame was custom designed and machined, and black anodized. the mitsudae pattern was machined into the frame and sandblasted, while the rest of the frame was directionally sanded to create a wood-like texture. the frame is 44 cm tall.
